Who Will Rule Whom? Nurgül Şenefe on AI, Creativity, and the Future of Art

Featured, Talks & Speaking Engagements

At the event she attended as the Secretary General of the European Illustrators Association, Nurgül Şenefe presented a collaborative infographic project she wrote and Emre Aluç illustrated. The work was exhibited between September 26–29 in Madrid, at Taller Fosforito. The exhibition, featuring illustrators from Spain, Turkey, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Romania, Germany, and the Netherlands, was an inspiring showcase of the diversity and shared concerns of creative productions.

A quote from Şenefe’s speech in Madrid:

“When we look to the future, we see another new risk. Even if copyright laws are eventually regulated — with permissions from artists, royalty payments, and transparency mechanisms — another potential danger still awaits us. Artificial intelligence can be a tool in the creative process, but if humans hand over creation entirely to it, who will rule whom? Will we control AI, or will AI control us?”

In her speech, Şenefe also examined questions such as:

“If employers, publishers, advertising agencies, and content producers increasingly turn to AI in their work merely for the sake of speed and cost efficiency, could artistic standards decline? Could society’s perception of aesthetics change? Could human creativity be pushed into the background?”

She emphasized:

“What would be the consequences of creativity shifting from humans to machines? For the future of art and our cultural heritage, we face a risk that could be extremely difficult to remedy — one that threatens human creativity, cultural diversity, and society itself.”

The symposium — along with the accompanying documentary, roundtable session, and exhibition — provided a valuable and archival contribution, reminding lawmakers and policymakers of the importance of creative labor.

Timeless Lines — Curated by Nurgül Şenefe

Talks & Speaking Engagements

The “Timeless Lines” exhibition brings together three master illustrators, each telling a unique story through their own creative journey. This exhibition invites you to witness how art — through line, form, and illustration — transcends time and space to become a universal language of cultural and personal expression.

What unites these artists is their exceptional mastery in blending drawing and painting, and the perfection each achieves within their own distinctive style. With fluid, expressive lines and extraordinary technical skill, they transform art into something timeless — crafting visual narratives that speak a universal language. Each artist, a traveler through time, explores the infinite possibilities hidden within lines and the emotional depth embedded in colors, keeping the power of art alive for eternity.

This exhibition is not merely an art event; it is an immersive experience that invites viewers to explore beyond the line and reflect on their own perceptions of art. Our artists use the universal language of line and color to push boundaries, carrying their stories beyond the limits of time. Every work on display is both a map of the artist’s inner world and a cultural legacy that defies the passage of time.

For collectors, Timeless Lines is also a call — each artwork represents an enduring heritage, a testament to cultural richness and the lasting value of creativity. These signature pieces stand as artistic treasures, destined to retain their meaning and significance for generations to come.

Through Timeless Lines, curator Nurgül Şenefe invites you to witness the eternal journey of art — and to discover the timelessness hidden within the line.
